Plateaux Festival (2019)

Sustainability is not only a question of ecological circumstances such as climate change, geographical features or agricultural technologies, but also of production and consumption. In a society like that of the modern Western model, which places consumption at the centre of its self-image, needs are obsolete. This implies a transformation from production to making as a fetish: the contradiction between making and consumption is resolved by the fact that consumption does not care about what is produced, but about that it is produced. And as long as it is made, one can consume. This is where the Plateaux Festival comes in, inviting local, national and international artists to discuss sustainability issues and solutions within the framework of the “Froh Ussicht” farm under the title “Creating Values”. Topics of organisation, working conditions inside and outside the art world, symbolic and social relationships, ecology and culture are conveyed from the point of view of sustainability. The latter is understood as a complex of themes in which a holistic approach reveals consequences. In addition, guests are invited to take up the theme of the Plateaux Festival with a Carte Blanche and incorporate the unexpected through curated performances, film evenings, installations and actions into the festival.

I have created the website for the Festival that runs from April until mid-September, 2019. Keeping in mind the idea of Plateaux, I have created both a teaser website available at main.plateauxfestival.ch and the main website at www.plateauxfestival.ch.

Nachhaltigkeit ist nicht nur eine Frage ökologischer Umstände wie Klimawandel, geografischer Besonderheiten oder Agrartechnologien, sondern eine Frage von Produktion und Konsum. In einer Gesellschaft, wie der des modernen, westlichen Modells, die den Konsum ins Zentrum ihres Selbstverständnisses legt, sind Bedürfnisse obsolet. Dies impliziert eine Verwandlung von Produktion zu Machen als Fetisch: Der Widerspruch zwischen Machen und Konsum löst sich dadurch auf, dass der Konsum sich nicht darum schert, was produziert wird, sondern darum, dass produziert wird. Und solange gemacht wird, kann man konsumieren. Das Plateaux Festival setzt hier an und lädt lokale, nationale und internationale Künstler*innen ein, um sich im Rahmen des Landwirtschaftsbetrieb Froh Ussicht unter dem Titel «Werte Schaffen» Fragen und Lösungen der Nachhaltigkeit zu behandeln. Themen der Organisation, der Arbeitsverhältnisse innerhalb und ausserhalb der Kunstwelt, symbolische und soziale Beziehungen, Ökologie und Kultur werden aus dem Standpunkt der Nachhaltigkeit vermittelt. Letzteres wird als Komplex der Themen verstanden, in dem eine gesamtheitliche Betrachtungsweise Konsequenzen aufzeigt. Zusätzlich sind Gäste eingeladen, die mit einer Carte Blanche die Thematik des Plateaux Festival aufgreifen und Unerwartetes über kuratierte Performances, Filmabende, Installationen und Aktionen in das Festival einfliessen.
